Well. . .I can't say that I remember the 1940s - ![]() Traditionally, a hero is someone who had to make a significant sacrifice in order to achieve his (or her) goal. Now, in 2009, we have a Superman who: 1. Has both of his adoptive parents alive. 2. Is married. ![]() 3. Can communicate with his birth parents--or what's left of them (unless this has been somehow retconned). 4. Has 100,000 of his own kind on a very nearby planet. 5. Has a cousin. 6. Has a dog ![]() Where's the sacrifice? Some people may say that he has to sacrifice his home life with Lois, he risks his life, etc. For someone like Superman, though, these aren't sacrifices: they're inconveniences. Without having to give up something that he desperately wants to have, he's just a really nice guy who does really good things, like a super-powered Boy Scout. My two cents. | |||||||
