Indeed, I'm looking to track down some of Swan's finest work and colour it, seeing as he's one of the many classic comic-artists which I'm looking to get to know a bit better trough art.

But there's just so much out there... so I need to narrow it down to some of the best stories, panels or covers that he ever had a hand in.

What do you say, folks? What's his best work of all time?

There's just no answer to this question as while i adore his work it was actually quite static and didn't evolve much over the years. I myself would however tip the period between Superman #385 - 423 as a particular high point as his lines are very clean thanks to his colaboration with inker Dave Hunt & Al Williamson and there's a particular sharpness and energy to the finished result. Only Swan himself can tell you when he himself was most satisfied with his work but i'm sure i've read this run was perhaps it...
Also if i were you i'd check out his 60s Adventure Comics run with the Legion, its 1960s pure science fiction pulp but there's obviously plenty of imagination on hand and the Swan penned covers are always very striking.

I'm lucky enough to have two pieces of original art from him in my collection and especially in this raw black & white format his work is always very solid. He may or may not appeal to a modern audience but the fact is he was a superb storyteller who's every page tells you the story and who's understanding of putting across believable anatomy and facial expressions is greatly underestimated:
