I'm guessing if you polled 100 random people, at least half would not be able to tell you what company publishes Superman, Batman and Spider-Man. And a good percentage of those, if you asked them, "What is DC?" or "What is Marvel?" probably wouldn't be able to tell you they are comic book publishers.
