But, that said, I am trying to remain optimistic that the titles will be, at the very least, enjoyable on their own merits. I've been buying the Superman titles non-stop since 1992 (and have built a solid back-issue run to 1985). That's not easy to walk away from. So, while I do remain optimistic, I am standing firm in my resolve. I will read ACTION COMICS and SUPERMAN. Period. I will not buy crossovers. I will not buy parts of a storyline that jump through a dozen different books. If DC is unable to tell self-contained stories within those titles, then I will reevaluate. But, until then, I will at least give them a shot.

That's my philosophy too. I have always looked to the positives when it comes to comics and while I share Rab's well argued misgivings completely I am hopeful that this new launch will give us a Superman who is self confident and inspirational again, and it does look like it might. I'm of the opinion the main reason Superman has failed since Infinite Crisis (and before even) is because the self doubting has been overplayed to almost saturation levels. 'Grounded' as a storyline is the end result of this negative mantra being applied to him, and after a full year of it I think DC knew exactly what they were doing here to some extent, no character could survive this intensity of self-doubt and angst - just look at Hal Jordan's characterisation by the early-to-mid 90s.... that's what Supermans today reminds me of. Except worse. \(geek\)
