Christopher Reeve remains for me the best Superman actor to date. The others were good mostly but something was missing. Welling never clicked with me and neither did Routh.
Dean Cain - so, so. Gerard Christopher - better than Cain or Welling or Routh. But Christopher never got his due.
Cavill? His interviews are great. He is engaging and I felt, prior to MOS, that he was perfect for the role. But, for me, his engaging, relaxed personality did not show in his Superman performances. Whether his fault or the directors, something was missing. Part of that was the Clark/Lois chemistry. It is smoldering with Tyler and Elizabeth but forced with Henry and Amy.
Just this year I watched Superman and Lois. I was unfamiliar with Tyler as I mostly didn't watch Supergirl. But wow. Tyler nails it. His off screen interviews are great. Relaxing and engaging as are Cavill's but, unlike Cavill, Tyler brings that vibe to his Superman performance. The guy is perfect in the role. When/if they do a within continuity Superman reboot Tyler is the type of actor they need to find for the role. One wonders how things might have turned out differently if Tyler had been cast as Supes in MOS.
