I think calling Byrne's run villains is overstating things.

Not villains per se; but laying the groundwork. An inhuman dystopia that deserved to die. Pretty close.

Krypton has to be arrogant. The planet blows up and nobody believes Jor-El. That is a necessary part of the story. Either they are arrogant, or they are stupid.

No, the ruling elite didn't believe Jor-El. Population doesn't even know.

I fully admit, I hate the Christ allegory people love to shove into Superman. I think having Krypton be a perfect world feeds into that idea. Also, if it is such a perfect world, it should not have doubted Jor-El.

Doesn't have to be specifically a Christ allegory. It could be a Hercules allegory, or any myth where a demi-god comes to earth and lives as a man.

I think the trailer from STM phrased it right:

"Once there was a civilisation much like ours, but with greater intelligence, greater powers, and a greater capacity for good. In one tragic moment, that world was destroyed."

It was a TRAGIC moment. Their sun exploded. They didn't do it to themselves. Their ruling council was too blind/comfortable to believe Jor-El. That's it. But it was a beauitful planet; a great people that acheived a near heavenly society.
