I have just watched this episode and found it... very 'soap'.

There is a formula at work here now, reminiscent of the 1970s superhero shows like The Incredible Hulk, where you will have a set number of 'superhero' moments (two hulk-outs per episode in The Incredible Hulk) and the rest of the episode will be standard soap-plots, cheap to film.

Still, in Lois and Clark here the 'Superhero' moments are so well shot and conceived that they are worthy of film. Following Superman as he sets off to rescue a korean submarine in dire trouble is the standout scene in the entire episode, visually at least. And then there is something out there, deep beneath the earth, that is so powerful it is capable of causing a major earthquake with its blows! But what is it?

The one genuinely interesting subplot initiated this episode comes with the political consequences of Superman having rescued a Korean Submarine. For Superman this deed is what he is for, for the American military though his aiding a foreign power as hostile as this is something they take as potentially worrying. Is Superman trustworthy if he is so willing to act in the benefit of an enemy power like this?
Only the Military would be so concerned by such a selfless deed, but the question as to where Superman's loyalties truly lie when framed in political terms like this is an interesting subject to explore, and whether the writers go on to develop this idea will be something I will be interested in seeing...

Indeed, as Superman will have to decide between being mainly for Americans or for the world at large, and face the political and military fallout when that happens!
