First and foremost, read as much history of the Norse era as you can. This will give you a good foundation for their system of beliefs which was very simple. You can read the Saga of Kings as well to see the evolution of the society.

Unfortunately, Odinism and Asatru are part of the neo-pagan and new age movement so there is a lot of open interpretation and things authors just came up with to fill out a book. Much of it really doesn't jive with what is known about Viking culture.

The 'religion' was basic; a family might simply have had an image of Thor and Freyr in their home, leave alcohol and food offerings before it and pray for strength, longevity, and fertility. Odin was a war god, and larger offering to him and chanting of his name was done before a conflict. And remember the Vikings believed that Odin could make them invincible.

If you do like to tickle your imagination more than the Vikings though..there are some books on Runes that include meditations and pathworkings which are kind of like visualized journeys into the realms of the Norse Gods. This is new age at its finest, but it can still be fun. Certainly no harm.

Hello, my name is Paul Sanders, long time lurker, occasional poster (so occasional as to escape detection...)

Anyway, I have seen on occasion that there are some members of a religion/philosophy/belief system named Asatru that I'm really interested in. Strangely enough, having read Thor's stories for years, and him being one of my favorite comic characters, has kind of influenced me towards mythology/spirituality in that direction.

Anyway, I searched and saw a bunch of reputable/disreputable websites regarding Germanic Neopaganism / Asatru. Anyway, Isearched the links at the top of the board, and while there is some good stuff there, I'd kinda like to try some books or other suggested sites to help me on that journey.

So, anyone specifically suggesting any books, etc? regarding the Asatru faith? Thanks,

    Paul Sanders
