With Spiderman coming out in May 2011 this is awful news for the Thor movie.
Marvel will have Spidey (huge box office numbers), followed immediately by Thor (brand new franchise, following a box office hit), followed by Captain America in July 2011.
This is major overkill. And a big bummer for Thor to have to follow Spidey after only a couple of weeks......bad news for us Thor fans and a stupid move by Marvel if you ask me. Setting the Thor film up for failure!
I agree, it does seem odd that they'd have all those movies sandwiched together, but you also have to remember that Marvel Studios isn't in charge of Spider-Man, Sony Pictures is.
And I might be cautiously optimistic here, but given the bad buzz and reception over Spider-Man 3, I doubt many people who saw that one will be rushing to see Spider-Man 4. I know I and several other people won't. But the average movie goer might, regardless.
Really, the delay might actually help, because then Marvel can drum up interest in 2010 leading up to the Thor movie. Get the comic back on track, maybe have the cartoon air next fall (fall of 2010) or even have a 'Thor vs.' cartoon movie feature and so on and so forth.
If they waste the opportunity to promote the character between now and July 17th 2011, then it will be an opportunity wasted.
I think with these movies they're making, Thor is going to be the biggest gamble out of them all. With Cap and the Avengers, people know who they are even if they don't read comics. Thor's a harder sell, but they've got the prime chance to get his name out there now and have it pay off in box office revenue.
