the money aspect of this. Allowing this to go on can't be profit-maximizing for Marvel, can it?

Just a "back of the envelope" calculation, let's be generous and say that JMS will give Marvel 8 issues of Thor a year and that each sell 100,000. If you replace him with someone who can do 12 issues a year, they would only need monthly sales of 800,000/12 = 66,667 in order to generate the same revenue. If you only get 6 issues of JMS Thor then the replacement needs to only sell 50,000 monthly to match the annual number.

Now in terms of profit, I'm sure it costs more to produce and print 12 different books instead of 8 or 6, but it can't be that much more. So maybe the replacement needs to do 55,000 a month or 72,000 to match JMS Thor's profit generating power.

The only thing I can figure is that there is a huge gap in the trade paperback market. I wonder if the JMS trades just sell like gangbusters, so Marvel puts up with it? Maybe that would be the difference if they replaced him?

I can think of a few other smaller differences, but some are positive and some are negative.

If this were just an issue of ticking off internet Thor fans, that's one thing, but Marvel should at least care about the bottom-line. I don't get it.
