First of all, Superman is more popular and he's practically an icon, so he would win just by his brand name. Secondly, Superman can beat pretty much anybody short of the Spectre or the Living Tribunal. Pre-Crisis Superman could do things like push planets and wipe out solar systems. Superman also has a wide assortment of powers. I'm not saying that Thor would go down easily, but I don't think that Superman beating Thor is out of the range of the possible.

Good grief... there you go again. That first sentence in your response says it all. To hell with realism, continuity, superman's weakness to magic, etc. etc. etc. So super-"man" would defeat the GOD of thunder due to his "brand name"?!?! WTF? Besides... Have you looked at the top 100 comics lately? Thor is OUTSELLING supes!

11 THOR #607 $2.99 MAR
51 SUPERMAN #697 $2.99 DC

However, POPULARITY be damned. Right is right and wrong is wrong... period. If that was the case SPIDERMAN would kick supermans butt! NOW THAT WOULD JUST BE WRONG! Correct? But according to your silly logic, spiderman should win.

So what's wrong with THOR winning? hmmmm? Supes would win because Marvel has gutless leadership and does NOT stand by their "icons". Period. DC would NEVER allow superman to lose. Marvel could give a sh*t. THAT is the difference.

However, if given total 100% control with both DC and Marvel out of the picture it would depend on which camps "fanboy" wrote it. Which in and of itself is stupid.

Further, at the end of the Thor 2nd series: No power in Heaven, earth or "infinite earths" would be able to handle Thor with the full 100% control of the Odin/Thor force. A thousand supermans would fall like toothpicks. heh. We can both play that stupid game.

I happen to be more of a Thor fan then a Superman fan. But Superman has movies, cartoons, he has shirts, sweaters, people get tattoos of him. He's been on people's body parts that we usually only expose our loved ones to. He's the bigger name then Thor. He has a bigger chance of winning due to popularity, because everyone knows Superman, not everybody knows Thor. Remember how the Marvel versus DC series was done by fan vote and not what characters would actually win in a fight? Also, sure Thor is a god, but Superman has like a zillion powers. Pre-Crisis he could do things like juggle planets. Thor can't do that.
