All the main heroes seem to have experienced a good deal of tragedy.

Spider-Man lost his uncle, and Gwen Stacy, Miles Warren, Ben Reilly, and,, it's a really long list.

Batman has lost his parents, Jason Todd (What's that? He came back years ago? Nope, that's not Jason Todd. Nah nah nah nana, it's not.), and a bunch of other people he cared about.

Daredevil has lost Karen and a few other girlfriends.

Has anyone really close to Thor died? The only two people that I can think of are Thunderstrike and Odin. Odin will probably come back, and Thunderstrike, how often is he mentioned? The only time that I remember was in that Grim Reaper Avengers issue during the Busiek/Perez run. I mean, I guess you could say that Thor lost everyone in Asgard, but there all pretty much back now.

and it would add so much more dimension to the characterization of Thor --

I have also often thought that Thor, with all his experience and existence involving war and fighting, should have lost many close friends and comrades-in-arms, as well as close friuends and family -- I have often thought that he should be portrayed like an old and battle-molded warrior with many many scars physical and emotional that are part of a story of triumph and tragedy

worthiness to weild Mjolnir has to include many heart-wrenching, humbling experiences, each painfully moving Thor closer to worthiness -- not all worthiness-fostering experiences need to be heart-wrenching, and those that aren't would add a great diametric to the bitter ones --

this is how to get people feel a shared-common-humanity with and for a warrior God like Thor

there is so much that can be done with Thor and IMO it seems that MU barely scratches the surface
