Sooooo... Ult Thor never actually had any power or strength, and the hammer was never a hammer???

So what abilities does he actually have now????

The recent Ultimate Thor mini was meant to clear all of this up. Thor has some degree of superhuman physical abilities higher than a lot of metahumans, but not as high as the Hulk. How he compares to other gods is also a question, but he doesn't come off as much stronger if at all compared to the other sons of Odin Balder and Loki. His hammer was enchanted by Odin and is the source of his weather powers.

The clarifications of his origin revealed Loki and an army of frost giants and superpowered Nazies destroyed Asgard during WWII. Odin is the source of power of Asgard and everything in it. With him dead Asgard ceased to be. He stored some of his power in different objects like Mjolnir so part of him would survive his death. Thor and Balder were reborn as mortals. Thor use technology like the belt and hammer to mimic his godly powers and undertake his "change the world" mission until Odin returned. Its not clear, but some time during Ultimates 2 Odin and the rest of Asgard were reborn as full gods. At the very least it is when a light showed in Thor's cell. Odin resorted Thor to full godhood and gave him the proper Mjolnir back.

So he has some large degree of superhuman strength and durability on his own. His weather powers come all from the hammer. So far he has only shown he can control thunderstorms.
