hehe There's a part just before he destroys Durok where Thor says, "I've become too dependent on Mjolnir" .
I can see as a warrior where having a weapon like Mjolnir would be fantastic.
JMS had JUST started to explore Thor's powers he got from Gaea before he left Marvel so yeah sometimes I wonder why Thor really needs Mjolnir, but, they were made for each other basically.

Yes, I'm all aware of how the story came to evolve. However, I can't see it making much sense or being a great move for the character. Why having 40+ years of Thor praising Mjolnir? Why would Odin give such a tool to his son? Would he encourage him leaning on his hammer if he always could do have do what we tought the hammer was responsible for? Mjolnir was a cool weapon, but with the new perspective it's largely redundant.

1.  We need to remember that Odin sacrificed one of his eyes to gain incredible knowledge and wisdom.  To that end, he has over time put MANY plans in motion to try his hardest to circumvent, get around, bypass, trick, dodge, or evade Ragnarok, all to no avail.  How many of those plans centered around Thor?  Several.  He's like any dad, he wants to see his boy succeed.  However, Thor doesn't have the vast wisdom and knowledge of his father, so Odin tries to teach him to use his head more.

2.  You said a few comments back that Thor became legendary but why hasn't Orion?  Well, not to be rude, but Thor's been around for centuries in our real life Lore, and Orion was just invented several years back.  Give Orion time and who knows, the right writers and enough of a fan base can make anyone legendary.
