When Odin imprisoned an alien race for attacking Asgard, Mangog was created (probably unintentionally). Although Odin restored the race, dissolving Mangog's corporeal form, Mangog's essence maintained a link to their emotional energy and quickly reformed.

Odin severed this link, as well, causing Mangog to shrink from sight. However, he continued to live. Igron (Loki's former lackey) found the rodent-sized Mangog lurking in Asgard's dungeon, and used his affinity for tapping 'worship energy' to connect Mangog to Asgard's worship of Odin (and for a time, Mangog posed as Odin). Mangog didn't see the need for Igron's continued existence and slew him, which had the side-effect of severing his connection to Asgard's energy. Mangog again shrank/faded out of sight.

Apparently a clone of Thanos found Mangog and re-established his connection to his parent race (or a reasonable facsimile). Thor slew this incarnation of Mangog, but Loki restored him again during Ragnarok (along with the likes Surtur and Jormungand). Thor was empowerd at the time and was able to crush Mangog's body and disperse his essence.

The reason Mangog can be brought back is because he is essentially a container for energy. Even if he is incinerated, Mangog's body can be restored via the template of Odin's original spell, provided he has an appropriate power source.

In MARVEL FANFARE #51 (which was originally going to be SILVER SURFER vol. 3 #1), Mangog was restored by the Supreme Intelligence using psychic energy.
