Thor vs Odin....

great art !!

but I'm really pissed about the status quo returning.

When will Marvel actually let Thor be his own man ?

During JMS' run there were all sorts of complaints about how Thor was too serious and spent too much time as ruler, not enough time as an adventurer/champion, etc., about how he seemed too old and mature, where was the fun-loving, shit-talking, rebellious warrior-born?

For Thor to be Thor, Odin needs to be around as the ruler of Asgard. Sure, you can put Balder or someone else in Odin's place, but that's a lot less interesting because Baldir simply doesn't have the stature (or power) to challenge Thor. He's Thor's little brother. Family issues in various forms are an important part of the Thor mythos, and you really need Odin around for that to be played out to its fullest. Not to mention that Odin is a great character himself.

I would have liked to have seen what JMS had in store for the long haul, as I'm sure he would have given us an original take on Thor's family dynamic (even moreso than we had already seen), but that wasn't in the cards, and I'm sure a lot of fans would have complained about it being too slow, too many talking heads, not enough action, etc.

Now, obviously, this could suck. Fraction has yet to prove himself as a Thor writer. This looks like a retread of Thor: Man of War (though that was a pretty cool issue as part of the series of one-shots), so maybe it will strike those of us who read that comic as a bit repetitive and redundant. But I'm not ready to give up on this yet.

I like classic Thor. He's a young character, full of rebellious energy. He's also plenty powerful enough without any runes or OP or anything. So mostly I'm ok with Odin being Odin and Thor being Thor. We'll see how it plays out.
