A question for the learned board concerning comic book maintenance. I was in a discussion with a fellow on face book and he stated that only one side of a comic book board was acid free. I wrote that I thought both sides were and he returned with the idea that only the smooth side was acid free and the rough side was not. I wrote that I thought the whole board was acid free (why would a set of boards just read "acid free" or not have instructions on the package on how to use them?) and the smooth side was just to provide less friction when removing a comic from the bag.
I could be totally wrong, I searched on line and found the info that some boards are better than others and about the smooth side for less friction while removing the comic.
Does anyone have any information concerning this topic?
A while ago I tried to learn more about this very topic. Unfortunately, I think the guy on facebook is right. Apparently, the uncoated side is not acid free (and even the coated side is not acid free after a little while).
Here's a nice(although distressing) link on the topic- http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=4534727&fpart=1
It seems that the most common comic backing boards are not that great for your comics.
