How about the numerous times he has been in mid air and thrown the hammer? He never starts plummeting towards the Earth. And the multitudes of times he hovers. I always thought it odd he couldn't fly without it considering his maternal lineage and weather powers. It doesn't really make him functionally more powerful being able to fly without Mjolnir, as its virtually always with him. It just makes more sense.

Actually, I can cite multiple occasions where he has fallen upon throwing the hammer, explicitly stating that he cannot fly without the hammer as well as many narrative and dialogue references attributing flight to Mjolnir.

In my experience, references to the contrary have usually turned out to be Thor throwing the hammer, then the next time we see Thor he's flying with Mjolnir, and the person presumes Thor remained hovering with Mjolnir out of his hand.

Cite those multiple occasions. Post some pics or tell me the comic, I have them all. I have seen him flying so many times and thrown his hammer threw multiple enemy planes, as well as seen him flying and thrown it at enemies to not immediately start falling. Never once have I heard this.

The references to his needing it to fly are absolutely correct, I am just saying it is silly because he does in fact throw it from the air a lot. And to me personally there is no reason he shouldn't be able to fly with his pedigree. The throwing and catching is even more ridiculous since he indisputably hovers all the time.

I think the examples of him throwing his hammer while flying are always questionable one panel affairs. Artistic licensing most likely has a good deal to do with it. What is certain is it's not how Thor's creators view it.
