I argued something similar in this thread a while ago:

As you say i think the core concept of the character needs the "lesson in humility" part to make him an interesting character and give him something to struggle with.

    Quote:
First, he's the ultimate aristocrat, the son of a king whose wealth and authority are literal orders of magnitude beyond that of even the richest and most powerful mortals.

    Quote:
That's a huge minus in a company whose bread-n-butter is about people whose lives are shit, and are clearly shit even at a glance. That's why Marvel loves Spider-Man, and that's why Marvel loves Hulk even though he's nowhere near as successful as Spider-Man in terms of movies. It's why they love Daredevil even though his movie was a complete failure and his book sputters along at second or third tier status.

    Quote:
Now I'm sure people are about to come in and show examples of Thor's life not being perfect. Thing is, writers have to really work at creating the difficulties in Thor's live. With the others I mentioned, the shit is built right into their core concepts. Spider-Man's dead parents, dead uncle that's his fault, his being dirt poor, and most people thinking he's a villain are right there inherent in him, before a particular writer so much as touches him. Hulk's curse is right there inherent in his core concept. Daredevil is a blind guy living in a shit neiborhood where he can hear every scream and smell every stink, right there in his core concept.

    Quote:
Writers have to work at making Thor something other than a Prince who is fighting to preserve a status quo that is incredibly awesome from his perspective. And Marvel writers hate that.

    Quote:
At the end of the day, they just don't like Thor for the reasons mentioned. Now that dislike isn't so great that they'll have Daredevil beat up Thor. But is enough that they'll snub him for Hulk.
