A couple of thought come to mind. Is Cates a big fan of Kirby's New Gods ?I really am and consider him as writer, and artist on those series one of the greatest in comics history. On a related note one of the main reason' s it was cancelled had more to do with Julius Schwarz distaste of the Marvel style more than sales.
Next is dinosaurs did not exist one billion years ago. They were virtually rendered extinct by a large size comet or asteroid sixty five million years ago.
As for the difference to say the Oeming time line I remind you this is a new(and sucky) universe.
