Why can Manga get it right but Marvel (and DC) can't?

    Quote:
Manga and anime are usually created by a single person, or based on the work of a single person or small group of people.

One Piece (which I'm a fan of) works because it represents the work of a single person and his vision. There is no shared universe; no previous continuity; no restrictions on content (outside of standard publishing restrictions). Oda creates the rules and maintain character personalities.

For a Manga to sell well it has to stand on its own merits.

A Marvel franchise can get by for years regardless of quality because it has an established fan-base.

This gets back to the reason why the first 4-5 seasons of Game of Thrones worked, and why the latter seasons failed. The latter seasons were based on George Martin's work, but diverged and went in different directions.

Season 8 went off the rails (in my opinion) because of logic gaps (that battle scene didn't make sense), ill-defined/rushed characterization evolution (Daenerys) and unsatisfactory conclusions to major plot points.

The replacement writers just weren't as good as Martin.

    Quote:
A case could actually be made that Cates and Aaron are treating the properties as if they are manga/anime. They treat the sandbox as if they created it, rather than just play in it. Thus, when they turn an existing franchise upside down and inside down to fit their approach to writing, it doesn't work as well as it would if they originated the franchise.

I agree.

But its also possible for a subsequent writer to elevate a franchise (Walt Simonson's Thor for instance). Of course he stayed true to the core mantra of the main character.

    Quote:
In addition, Oda (One Piece) is a far better writer than Cates and Aaron.***

I'll maybe check One Piece out at some point. I'm enjoying One Punch Man and Berserk and have just ordered Kaiju Number Eight. Looking into getting Demon Slayer and there is a Youtuber doing a book called Demon Rush that also looks like my kind of stuff.
