You're remembering the Beauty & the Beast mini in the 80s (Dazzler and Beast).

That is a mini-series I have never read, It's one that no one even remembers today, it fell in between the cracks of history and was never ever referred to again, by anyone. I don't even know what the plot to it was. And yet as I recall wasn't it pencilled by the superb Jackson Guice...?

No. Don Perlin did the art. He was the Defenders artist at the end, then went to Transformers. Nocenti wrote it.

Alexander Flynn, the guy claiming to be Doom's son, never became popular. I like him, and I believe his story because Doom's a horrible [bleep]. He was rounding up the Gladiators for Hollywood-produced fighting. They eventually showed up in New Mutants. Possibly there's some connection to Shadow King? Maybe a front for Mojo? Who knows. I really think this idea spawned Nocenti's idea for Longshot (about a year later), but I'm not sure.

But yeah, no one ever mentions the mini.
